Rootsville Hurricane Headed this way

Firstly the acts : no safe option of going for an easy audience by concentrating on a specific genre, ROOTSVILLE is splitting, fusing and combining every conceivable music form; the truly exotic – homemade African violin specialist JULDEH shares billing with the pulsating electronic dance beats of Aussie superstars THE PRESETS. Newcomers The Electric Lovechild share a stage with Madchester originals THE INSPIRAL CARPETS. The Godfathers of world music OSIBISA (sunshine day), compete for audience affection with the Modfathers of Punk THE RIPPS and hometown gypsy rebels THE DESTROYERS are working on a brand new hybrid with the earthshattering DHOLBLASTERS.

Secondly the setting. There can be nowhere in the UK where such an event could be staged in such a location. 4 stages smack bang in the middle of a Victorian industrial landscape. One stage will be a world premiere for live music – under the immense railway arch of the North Yard. This will be no scrimp and save production either – there can only be one way to handle this ambitious project – BIG.

Most amazing – and daring – of all is the cost. FREE from midday until 6pm then only £20 for the next 12 hours. Kent Davis one of the organisers said ‘don’t think we’re saving the best till last either – one of the biggest acts will be before 6pm’.

‘Rootsville is a not for profit company with the assets reserved for artistic projects – our main aim is to be as accessible as possible to as many as possible’.

We can’t tell you what to expect, because we don’t know what to expect ourselves. Apparently there are some really BIG surprise acts yet to be announced. But a live music event of this staggering ambition – right in the city centre, with all the festival trimmings (see ad) deserves support and R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

Ah well, after a week of anxiety, troubling whether to cancel the event or not, we decided not to bottle it and progress as planned. Certainly the ambition was there, and there were extremely excellent and heroic performances from artists, crew and organisers alike - in the most testing of adverse conditions. Unfortunately the manifest effect of the weather was to ensure delayed performance times etc - frustrating for performers and audience alike. To anyone who attended or performed organised or supported, we are really grateful for your support and can only apologise if the rain undermined your enjoyment or perspective. Please let us know your thoughts. cheers Kent - Rootsville Festival organiser

ps Please send us any pictures, comments or reviews that you find about the festival. Next year’s Festival planning will be starting again soon……..
